Given the self-produced roots of his main project, Yellow Ostrich, it’s no surprise that the perpetually creating Alex Schaaf went back to making captivating, lo-key music during his down time. Under the name Human Heat, Schaaf recruited a who’s who of velvet-voiced indie-darlings, including favorites TEENS and Tei Shi, to help him add some extra smoothness to the self-titled EP. While Yellow Ostrich has been veering more into wide spaces and wild guitars, Human Heat pares things down to a much smaller scale — it’s more music for a dimly lit room than an open field. The four tracks have a sexy darkness to them, and none more than the stand out “Fever” featuring Tei Shi, a track that slinks along effortlessly. Human Heat is a fascinating departure from a prolific voice who always has new things to say, so be sure to check out the EP above.
