Hawker’s Delight: Cheap Malaysian & Singaporean Food

By Foodobyte @foodobyte

Looking for a quick and easy post-workout meal, Grape and I met up with her bro at Hawker’s Delight on Main St. It’s a dinky restaurant that serves up homestyle Singaporean and Malaysian food. The menu is cheap cheap, averaging around $6-7 per entree. Cash only, though.

I must’ve been over-exhausted because I read the wrong menu description when deciding what to order. Thinking of Mee Goreng, I mistakenly chose Mee Siam ($6.50): thin rice noodles served in sweet sour and spicy peanut soy bean tamarind gravy, garnished with tofu puff, egg, tofu, chives and bean sprouts.

Even if I did read Mee Siam’s description correctly, it was wrong as well because it was only sweet. That’s the true description: sweet. Nothing else. Sadly, I also dragged Grape’s bro into ordering the same thing… it wasn’t entirely my fault though, the menu picture looked way better than real life. Do not order.

Grape was smarter and actually chose what she wanted: Laksa ($7.15): wheat noodle served in mild curry, coconut milk, dried shrimp and garnished with tofu puff, fish cake, egg, shredded chicken, prawns and sprouts. Definitely tasted way better than ours and actually packed quite a bit of heat.

We also shared some freshly-made roti paired with a curry. It had a chewy texture with a mild crisp on the outside. I liked this one better than Mamalee‘s that explodes into flakes when just looking at it.

Final Bytes

  1. Surprisingly clean restaurant
  2. Best for 2-4 people
  3. Order up front
