Have Plastic Surgery Trends Changed Due to The Pandemic? If So, How?

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

When the term "plastic surgery" comes up, the first thing that comes to mind is slowing down the effects of aging. Plastic surgery aims to improve an individual's guise and increase their performance. It is not only for women but also for men because they want to remain attractive regardless of their age. Most of the time the procedure involves aesthetic or cosmetic surgery, which modifies a body part that the clients find unappealing, for instance, breast enlargement and liposuction. Some cosmetic procedures do not involve cutting and stitching. There are instances when the process required is removing unwanted hair, among others. The other type of plastic surgery is reconstructive, which aims to correct body and face defects such as traumatic injuries and congenital physical disabilities.

Sometimes, some people fear going through the process because of "plastic." Lack of knowledge is a big deal because it leaves some bound to a particular state. People often associate the term with fakeness, but that is not the case. Once someone has full details about the procedure, they finally go through it. While adults consider plastic surgery a way to stay attractive, kids think it is a means through which they fit into peer groups. The decisions to go through the procedure vary among different people. There should be caution when people consider it as a means to change their lives. Experts take their time to interview clients to check if they qualify for the surgery. Some are not emotionally mature to handle the surgery. Thus, they may be doing it wrong. For instance, emotionally unstable individuals need to work with a trained therapist to ensure their emotional stability before the process. Emotions tend to affect how people perceive themselves, and they could come along with esteem issues.

How Trends Have Changed

Over the pandemic, work and personal life shifted online; thus, 2022 plastic surgery trends have increased. In the first few days of working from home and holding video calls on sites such as zoom, people started becoming self-conscious about their appearances. The mind can tend to play tricks on people. It is as if the build was hidden while working at the office. However, self-consciousness tends to destroy one's esteem. Also, individuals having to see their faces on the screen made them appear like strangers to themselves. Some parts such as the eyes, cheeks, and neck area became magnified via the filters featured on video calls. People had to improve the features and tighten some places that made them appear aged. For those that managed to get appointments, it worked well for them. Additionally, it was easy to go through the surgery because while working from home, healing became more accessible because of the little or no movements involved. Additionally, one did not have to ask for leave days while they could work from the comfort of their homes. It was easier for people because they got help from family members, among others they lived with.

The pandemic significantly contributed to plastic surgery procedures. One could think it was high time for people to work on a tight budget because of the fear of the unknown. However, irrespective of the cost of plastic surgery, appearance was a big deal in the face of the pandemic. While maintaining a company's image is essential to attract clients, so is self-image. For the first time at a zoom meeting, meeting someone could scare off someone. Humans tend to put a face to someone they talk with via phone until they meet in person, and they do not fit the expectations. Some on dating sites had to maintain a youthful look to remain appealing. Over the pandemic, individuals stressed self-care. Staring at one's face distracts from the work at hand and is also risky to someone dealing with esteem issues because it heightens the desire to modify their flaws. Insecurities manifest from what people say about themselves and start imagining the judgments others make based on their self-doubt. Even if the plastic surgeons felt insecure about what the pandemic would translate for the industry, mainly because of a decline in disposable household income due to in-person visits to the doctors, it was beyond their expectations. During the lockdown, virtual consultations heightened because clients considered going through the surgery after lockdown. Other than that, people had all the time to research what they needed to know about the procedure. For instance, healing times differ based on the surgery required in the specific process. Before scheduling an appointment with the medical experts, it is necessary to gather all the information needed and finally make the decision because it is personal. Medical experts cannot make conclusions for their clients, but they are of great help because it helps lead them.
