Working primarily in textiles, her re-fabrication of cultural and personal ephemera results in a rueful yet bold kind of Pop art. Whitmarsh seeks to make her process seen in the work itself. A process that views failure and success as coexistent. Her work acknowledges the repetitiveness of culture yet still finds a compulsion to create, to be original, and to seek meaning; even if this meaning is arbitrary, personal or constantly shifting. The work is both a window opening onto these questions and evidence of her compulsions.
