Hair and Face Shapes: Styling, Accessories, and More

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

Every single person is unique: we all have different ethnic backgrounds, and past that, our face shapes, hair texture, and other things give us that special "you" look.

But to make the most of your appearances, you have to know how to play to your strengths and draw other people's eyes away from your flaws. You can certainly do this by understanding your hair type and face shape!

If you're now wondering about styling and accessories for different hair and face shapes, then keep reading. We'll give you some great tips here!

Round Face Shape

As the name suggests, a round face shape is, well, rotund. You'll have a very circular-shaped face where the length is pretty much equal to the length.

Hairstyles that have layers are also a plus since it'll help bring attention away from your round face and help elongate it. Never go for straight-across and/or heavy bangs, as they'll make your face look even squatter. Side-swept bangs are a much better choice.

Because your face is so round, you'll want to go for longer hairstyles. So a long cut with soft layers can really elevate your look.

Square Face Shape

Here are the characteristics that people with square face shapes have:

  • Broad forehead
  • Angled and broad jaw

Those who have square face shapes will do well with short and medium hair lengths. You might think that the longer your hair, the better, but that isn't necessarily true. On the other hand, cuts shouldn't go shorter than your jawline.

For the best looks, go with either a lob or bob!

Heart Face Shape

When you have a heart face shape, it can be somewhat of a weird one. Here, you'll have a broad forehead but a narrow jawline.

To keep your forehead from being the star of the show, you might think you need some bangs. But instead, that'll just make you look more top-heavy!

What you want to do is avoid short bangs and go for side-swept long bangs instead.

As for haircuts, you'll want to go for either longer hairstyles or those that end right at your jawline. The motion of your hair at the jawline will help bring out all the best parts of your face.

Diamond Face Shape

It might sound impossible, but you can indeed have a diamond face shape! Characteristics include:

  • Narrow forehead
  • Wide and high cheekbones
  • Narrow jawline

What's great is if you've already read the heart face shape section, then you're set! All of the hairstyles there are applicable for diamond-shaped faces too.

You can also try a deep side part so that it accentuates both your cheekbones and jawline. On the other hand, if you're a fan of middle parts, you'll want to tuck in your hair at your ears to make sure your beautiful cheekbones stand out.

Oval Face Shape

Oval face shapes are a little easier to work with since your face is already elongated. You won't have to work harder to make your face look longer, as with the other earlier face shapes.

In fact, oval face shapes are considered the most aesthetically pleasing. Take a look at any model and you'll notice that they have oval face shapes. So if this is your face shape, you're quite lucky!

How do you know if you have an oval face shape though? Well, for one, the length of your face should be approximately 1.5 times longer than the width of it. Also, when you look at your forehead and jaw, they're pretty much the same width.

You're pretty much free to go wild with any hairstyle if you have an oval-shaped face. However, what'll suit your face most is soft layers. Just make sure you don't go overboard with layers, as it can make your face look too long.

For a more edgy look, feel free to go with something extremely short, like a pixie cut! It'll definitely look super cute.

Hair Accessories

After reading the above, you now have a good idea of the most flattering hairstyles for different face shapes. But what else can you do to make your hair really stand out?

Use some accessories, of course!

Below are some great ways you can perk up your hair.

Feathers

This might feel like you're back in the 2010s, singing along to Kesha. But the fact is, feathers in your hair can really add some pizazz!

All you need are some crimp beads and feathers, and you're good to go! Feathers are a great way to get some color in your hair if you don't want to commit to dyeing it.

Headbands

We know what you're thinking: headbands are for kids! However, they're actually a fantastic hair accessory for adults too!

Of course, you'll want to go for more mature or even edgy styles. Pick out thin headbands with things like studs or even spikes. Or you can opt for thick headbands with tartan prints on them.

What's great about this accessory is you can switch them out to have different ones for your various outfits.

Claw Clips

If you want to keep your hair out of your face and eyes, plus you love the casual laidback look, then get yourself some claw clips.

It's handy to have a few around the house, plus they come in different colors and styles.
