Verdict on Gunner
Recap
Gunner follows a decorated soldier going to war against a drug gang who kidnaps his children. He will fight through anything that gets in his way to get his children back, no matter how many bodies he leaves in his path.
Best Parts
Lee is a non-sense soldier who doesn’t care how many people he leaves behind him. There is no attempt to make it a stealth mission to get his soldiers back. This is refreshing to see and shows that the gang is facing a threat like never before.
We get good action sequences, that highlight the strengths in Lee’s ability as a special forces soldier. There is one sequence which is standout involving parachuting. We also get a more serious side to the story, with a soldier dealing with trauma.
Worst Parts
The biggest glaring thing that stood out as bad, was the police side of the story. They don’t seem to trust Lee and don’t care if something happens to his children. The other thing that can come off more negative would be the idea that this is a mix of the later Rambo movies and Walking Tall. However, it struggles to get the message of those movies through.
Performances
Luke Hemsworth does a great job in the leading role, showing a determined figure. He continues to make a name for himself in these types of action movies. Morgan Freeman takes more of a supporting role and takes the type of role you would expect to see him in during these action movies. The rest of the supporting cast is solid enough, but not many of the characters are overly memorable.
Final Thoughts – Gunner is an entertaining, non-stop action movie.
