Walking down an aisle of a convenient shop which stocks a little bit of everything apart from that one thing you want, these caught my eye.
Well, they are crisps so it’s natural for one as addicted as me to stare intently at them but Guinness flavoured?!
I had to try them!
Guinness, if you didn’t know already, is a Stout originating from Ireland.
It’s been going for many many years, since 1759 in fact and is the most popular and best selling alcohol in Ireland as well as being sold around the world.
It is also known as “the black stuff” since it looks black…. like something that seems a little dodgy to drink really, with a white head on top, magic!
Being honest, I’m not really a fan of Guinness.
It’s something you really have to try hard to get used to as it is extremely bitter, still, if these taste like it, I’ll know!
The back of the package is full of useful information about the crisps and the company, coming with this little story.
“A love story like no other, the meeting of the world’s most famous stout and the world’s finest artisan crisp to produce a snack like no other. Perfect for sharing with your mates.
We’ve hand cooked quality potatoes to crisp perfection, before evenly flavouring them with a unique blend of roasted barley and hops.

“The world’s finest artisan crisp”?
I can’t say I’ve heard of “Burts Chips” before but it is certainly a bold claim!
Also, are they American?
I have to say I absolutely love the idea that they have flavoured the crisps the same way that Guinness is made, by roasted the barley and hops.
I’d like to see tomato ketchup crisps try using real tomato ketchup ingredients in their flavouring!
Always reassuring to see all natural flavours, no artificial colours, no MSG and no hydrogenated fats in a product like this, a refreshing difference to quite a few crisps!
This crisps are certainly hand cooked, if these crisps suck I’m afraid old Richard is to blame.
Also, if I get my own field I’m calling it butter 2.
So, without further ado, lets take a peek inside.
Hmmm, looking good, they look like the ones on the packaging which is always a good sign and the thickness is great!
The taste?
Well, I would definitely say these were beer crisps.
They have a very yeasty flavor which, like most beer, means once you get used to the taste they are actually really enjoyable.
They are very moreish and the crisps themselves are very tender and crunchy, not too hard, not too soft.
As for the Guinness flavor I’m not 100% convinced.
Without knowing the flavour, I’m not sure I would have guessed.
I tasted quite a lot like “the black stuff” but “the white stuff” (the head of the stout) gives a lot of flavor too which doesn’t seem to come through in these.
All in all they are probably as good as you are ever going to get to a crisp tasting like another product, be it Worcester sauce, tomato ketchup, Marmite…Shudder….yes, it’s a real thing.
I also love the fact that these are quality crisps and that reflects in the taste unlike some crisps I have tried which sound amazing but are terrible.
They are also part of the LEAF Marque (Linking Environment And Farming) which means they are committed to improving the environment for the benefit of wild life and the countryside…
Wait…………..I thought these were supposed to be a guilty pleasure….
