Most people want to have their home stand out from everyone else’s, and so they decorate it according to their tastes. A problem arises, however, when prefabricated homes and stores where you can buy an entire room are the only options when it comes time to arrange a house. Those who want a very unique home know that they must take care to personalize it with unique furniture, decor, and personal items. Here are 5 unique ways to decorate your home, making it full of character.

1. Paint

The paint on the exterior and interior of a house, one of the main features of a home, will set it apart from the rest in the neighborhood. There are two ways to make for a unique paint job. The first is to go with neutral colors, while opting to add color in the form of changeable furniture, decor accents, and household plants. This is a safe way to accommodate for someone with ever-changing tastes or those who like to change decor with the seasons. The other option is to paint the walls with colors. You can either use unique and saturated colors like teal, sunburst orange, lime, or magenta, or alternating and complementary colors. Either way, the paint sets the atmosphere for your home and can charge it with energy, so put some thought into how you want to stand out. For more space, use lighter colors, especially on the ceiling – dark colors tend to make a room feel smaller.

2. Windows

Windows are the portal to the outside world, letting in light and life through their glass surface. Paying special attention to these important aspects of a room will make sure that you make your home stand out. Many people purchase any old window treatment at the nearest home store and end up with something plain and boring. If you want a unique window, consider unique window treatments. One idea to consider, for both the inside and the outside, is using shutters. Shutters add a certain degree of class to a window treatment, and they also let you control the light coming in, adding a whole new dimension to home decor.

3. Original Art

One excellent and fun way to make your space one-of-a-kind unique is to craft some ideas into existence. Though it is seemingly intimidating at first to the first-time crafter, once you make something you will become addicted and all kinds of possibilities will open up. There are countless websites devoted to guiding beginners and experts alike towards the completion of a craft project, ranging from some basic wall art to upgrading old furniture. Another way to incorporate individual taste is to have some of your original photographs printed in a large format and professionally framed. These are excellent conversation pieces that you can hang up all around the house. Landscape photos instantly expand the space in your home and are a great quick and easy way to do so.

4. Drywall

This decor accent can make a world of difference in your home. They are an easy way to add some instant class and elegance to any room in the house. Use molding to add architectural charm and texture around doors, at the base of the floor, or running along the ceiling. It is relatively affordable and can be installed by yourself fairly easily.

5. Wallpaper

This is a tried-and-true way to add instant color, texture, and personality to those “seas of drywall” found in so many homes. Wallpapers come in endless choices, from budget prints to designer label prints, and therefore choosing one might be a challenge. Luckily, they are easy to apply and remove along with your changing whims and moods, or even with the seasons!
