Democrats & liberals [sic] predominate in Hollywood.
Well-known supporters of Obama include Gwyneth Paltrow, Barbra Streisand and Eva Longoria. In 2016, TV actresses America Ferrera and Debra Messing are outspokenly pro Hillary, while quieter but more powerful Hillary-supporters, such as director Steven Spielberg, Dreamworks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Disney Studio chairman Alan Horn, sponsor fundraising events for Hillary. Fewer Hollyweirdos are openly pro-Bernie Sanders, most notably Susan Sarandon, who recently got into a Twitter fight with Debra Messing over their candidate differences.
There are conservatives in Hollywood, but most of them conceal their identities for fear of job repercussions, such is the much-touted self-proclaimed “tolerance” of liberals. (See “Secret Republicans in California’s Silicon Valley and Hollywood” )
Now, there are indications that increasing numbers of Hollywood conservatives and independents are lining up to support Donald Trump, considered one of their own as a former TV star (in “The Apprentice,” among others) and producer. (In fact, Trump is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and receives an annual pension of more than $110,000 every year!)
Paul Bond reports for The Hollywood Reporter that on March 10, 2016, at an undisclosed location somewhere in the Los Angeles area, about 200 members of Hollywood’s private group of conservative Republicans — known as “Friends of Abe” — gathered to watch the GOP debate between Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and John Kasich. It was an invite-only list that included everyone from recognized actors to rank-and-file studio workers.
At one point early in the debate, when Trump blasted the entertainment industry over Disney employees who allegedly lost their jobs due to abuse of the guest-worker program, one of the “Friends of Abe” clapped and looked around to see if others were equally enthusiastic. Some were, including one invitee sporting a hat emblazoned with “TRUMP.”
A conservative wealth manager who didn’t want to speak publicly because most of his Hollywood clients are leftists, said, “For every Cruz or Rubio supporter I talk to, there are 10 Trump supporters. I tell them, ‘If you don’t want to feel the Bern, convert your IRAs now rather than pay his 92 percent tax rate.’ I know they like their Teslas, private schools and million-dollar mansions, but they won’t afford all that if they’re allowed to keep only 8 percent of their income.”
Hollywood denizens who are Trump-supporters include:
- Actor Jon Voight, who endorsed Trump on March 8, saying: “I pray all Americans who have seen and felt the meltdown of America with the Obama years, to please fight for Donald Trump.”
- Rocker Ted Nugent, who said he knows it “for a fact” that there are others in entertainment who back Trump but are too timid to say so out loud.
- Singer Kid Rock.
- Actor Stephen Baldwin.
- Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson.
- Author (American Psycho) and screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis, who said in a tweet he was “shocked” that most of his companions at a recent dinner said they would vote for Trump — though they “would never admit it publicly.”
- Actor Robert Davi (Die Hard, License to Kill, Goonies, The Expendables 3), who wrote in a piece for Breitbart.com’s conservative Big Hollywood: “We should thank God that Trump is in this race. The media and the establishment are terrified. They paint Trump and his supporters as racist and uneducated.… Some will not openly come out and say they support him because they’re afraid of being falsely labeled by some here in Hollywood.”
Trump began wooing Hollywood early on. Last July, he spoke to Friends of Abe at the lavish Luxe Sunset Blvd. Hotel in Brentwood, where he was well received. At that event, he told The Hollywood Reporter that his support among celebrities and entertainment workers was stronger than outsiders realize: “I think the liberals in Hollywood support me behind my back.”
But Jeremy Boreing, who runs Friends of Abe, says it’s a “massive overstatement” to say conservative Hollywood is uniformly lining up for Trump. “It is fair to say that several in our community are starting to give Trump another look and a few are starting to openly support him. … We’ve suffered six years of betrayals from the establishment, seven years of watching our nation weakened on the international stage, and a generation of assault by weaponized political correctness. People are pissed.”
Conservative author and talker Ann Coulter is one of Trump’s biggest advocates. Coulter has been working behind the scenes to drum up support for him in Hollywood at dinners with Clint Eastwood and a few dozen others in the industry that she won’t name. Coulter said, “Hollywood should support him for all sorts of reasons, not least of which is the fact that it’s impossible to get around in L.A. with 2 million illegals on the road. On the other hand, Hollywood liberals may have to start paying their maids more.”
