Grey and White Knit Hat | Free Pattern

As winter come I always have a sudden urge to knit scarfs, cowls, hats and gloves. So when Jane asked me to knit her a basic wool hat, I was more than happy. I had a full freedom to choose the design and pattern of the hat. We have discussed with Jane that the colors of the hat should fit her winter outwear. So when I came to the yarn shop I chose dark grey and milk white skeins of PERU Yarna Wool.

Materials

- Size 8 (5.0mm) Circular Knitting Needles

- 1 Skein of Grey Peru Yarna Wool ( 500 gramms)

- 1 Skein of White Peru Yarna Wool (500 gramms)

Size

Hat diameter is 56 cm/22 in

14 stitches and 21 row = 4 in / 10 cm in rib knit.

Steps

Cast on 72 stitches.

If you would like to increase the size of the hat add the number of stitches dividable into 6!

I prefer to do this on streight needles, and then transfer the stitches to the circular needles.

Rib: K2P2

Knit the 8 cm /3.1 in of the rib. It took me 17 rows to reach this length.

I started mixing the grey and white stripes right after the end of the rib.

Switch to Knit stitch.

Here is the patttern I used for the hat:

Tip: Don’t forget to twist the both threads after each round. In that you will avoid ugly lon stitches on the wrong side of the hat and it will look nice and tidy.

Decrease:

K10, K2 together, repeat around 6 times

Continue decreasing in this way each round until 6 stitches remain.

You might find it uncomfortables to continue with circular needles when so little stiches are left. In this case you can swith to double pointed ones.

Cut yarn and thread tail through remaining stiches.  Pull tight and weave in end on inside of hat.

The hat is really nice and basic. If you are an intermediate knitter it will take you about 2-3 hours to knit it. I especially like the nice twirl you get after decrease.

Here are some more photos of the hat and its new owner:
