Job Description

Handle a variety of duties related to fire suppression, fire prevention, and emergency medical services. Inspect commercial structures to prevent fires. Attend training associated with modern day fire service delivery. Respond to a variety of emergencies to reduce the loss of life and property. Develop business pre-fire plans to become familiar with structures. Demonstrate fire safety and emergency practices to the community. Must be 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, and possess a high school diploma or GED plus six months to one year of advanced study or training in firefighting and basic life support. IFSAC or Pro Board Firefighter II certification meeting NFPA Firefighter II standards are required. South Carolina or National Registry EMT-Basic or higher certification is desired. As part of employment requirements, the City of Greenville will require all new hires (that are not an EMT- Basic or higher) obtain certification as an EMT – Basic within one year of employment and maintain certification. Must be able to work 24/48 hour shifts. Must have a steady/reliable work history. A valid SC driver’s license is required with no license suspensions during the last 5 years for DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless homicide, or involuntary manslaughter. Must pass an entry level written exam and physical strength/agility test. Must pass a background investigation to include a clear criminal record. Must have a good credit history and not have defaulted on a student loan. Must have an honorable discharge from the U.S. military (if applicable). Must pass pre-employment screenings (drug, vision, hearing, stress and pulmonary function tests, and psychological exam). In addition to completing an online application, copies of your certifications / credentials must be mailed to the attention of the Fire Chief’s Office at PO Box 2207, Greenville SC 29602 in order for your application to be processed. Your certifications must be mailed within 2 weeks of submitting your online application.
