What could be better than a festival of New York City’s best food, drink, and music? The answer is nothing. The Great Googa Mooga festival, brought to you by the same folks that put on Bonnaroo, is taking over Brooklyn this weekend for the second year in a row and we couldn’t be more excited. After a very successful launch last year, the festival is back and looking to be better than ever. A quick rundown of the best the festival has to offer below!
This year’s Great GoogaMooga is jam-packed with big-time bands such as The Flaming Lips, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Matt & Kim, Father John Misty, and Cults. Yes, we’re freaking out!
Yes, the lineup is obviously amazing. But what we’re really excited for is the food and drinks lineup. Vendors such as Blue Marble Ice Cream, Dumont Burger & Shakes, Northern Spy Food Co. (my favorite restaurant in all of New York), People’s Pops, Eataly, and so many more. I would have lined to see more of my favorite smaller bands playing, but nonetheless, if you’re heading to GoogaMooga, you’re in for a treat. (B-)
The Flaming Lips
Friday, 6:15pm @ Nethermead Stage
If you’ve seen the Flaming Lips before, you’re well aware that they’re one of the best performers out there. And word on the street is that they’ve put together an entirely new live repertoire.
Sharon Van Etten
Saturday, 1:15pm @ Nethermead Stage
Nearly everyone else I work with here at The Wild Honey Pie had already seen Sharon Van Etten when I first witnessed her stunning beauty at Newport Folk Festival last year. Sure, I believed all the good things they had to say about her — but I didn’t realize quite how magnificent she’d be. Do not miss her set!
Father John Misty
Saturday, 6pm @ Nethermead Stage
Former Fleet Foxes drummer Joshua Tillman first shared his material as Father John Misty last year with his debut Fear Fun. One listen of his hit “Funtimes in Babylon” and I guarantee you’ll be sold. Nothing will be able to match his smooth vocals and endearing lyrics this weekend at the Great Googa Mooga.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Friday, 8:30pm @ Nethermead Stage
This one is an absolute no-brainer. Armed with their brand new album, Mosquito, Yeah Yeah Yeahs are going to blow the imaginary roof off the part on Friday night.
Pearl and the Beard
Saturday, 3:45pm @ Joe’s Pub Stage presented by Lexus
Pearl and the Beard is our sleeper pick of the festival. Though you might not have heard of them, this trio will be your next favorite live act. They crack hilarious jokes, have unmatched charisma on stage (and some of the sexiest harmonies and melodies you’ll ever experience). Check the Christmas-themed Honey I’m Home session we did with them last last year below!
- People’s Pops
- Momofuku Milk Bar
- Northern Spy Food Company
- Burger Joint
- Roberta’s Pizza
Though there aren’t a ton of bands playing, Great Googa Mooga isn’t without scheduling conflicts. You’re going to have to balance your desires to eat all the food, drinks all the drinks, and see either:
- Father John Misty or Pearl and the Beard on Saturday at 3:45pm.
- Matt & Kim or Red Baraat on Saturday at 6:45pm.
- Cults or an appearance by Michelle Bernstein (with special guest Sharon Jones) at 3:30pm on Sunday.
