Great Gatsby Fashion: How to Rock a Flapper Frock

By Girlratesworld @girlratesworld

By now, you’ve probably heard quite a bit about the new movie based on the classic ‘20s novel “The Great Gatsby.” Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the title character, supported by an all-star cast including Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. The film is directed by Baz Luhrmann, whose previous resume includes the controversial “William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet,” and the film promises to be a unique take on Fitzgerald’s book.

But enough about that. What you really want to know is how to own the ‘20s flapper girl look, right? Let’s get to it!

The Hair

If you’re already rocking a bobbed haircut, you’re halfway there. Use hair gel to create some structured waves along one side of your hairline, or don a wide headband or even a cloche hat. If your hair’s long, try a low chignon right at the nape of your neck.

The Dress

The typical flapper dress is pretty shapeless; most are sleeveless and fall loosely around the waist to just below the knee. This style is meant to de-emphasize your curves, which differentiates it from most modern dresses. A straight-waisted dress can be difficult to pull off on some body types, so be sure to try things on before you buy. Also, a little fringe never hurt anyone!

The Shoes

Nothing’s more ‘20s than a T-strap shoe with a slight heel. Look for a nude pair with slight embellishments to make them a bit more modern while still evoking a Lost Generation feel. Do the Charleston in these for full effect!

The Accessories

Long necklaces and strings of pearls—faux or real—are particularly ‘20s, especially when worn in multiples; pile these on to get the look right. Flapper ladies also frequently rocked satin or velvet gloves, long scarves and dramatic makeup; highlight your cupid’s bow with red lipstick to get that silent film star look.

The best way to pull off the “Great Gatsby” look is to approach it with a carefree attitude, so don’t think too hard about your ensemble. Have fun with it and enjoy a night out on the town as a mysterious flapper girl!
