The following is a letter written to the editor of the New York Times by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont). I wholeheartedly agree with what Senator Sanders says. This country could have already taken substantive action to curb global climate change had it not been for the obstructionist tactics of the Congressional Republicans.
To the Editor:
“Climate Efforts Falling Short, U.N. Panel Says” (front page, April 13) correctly points out the dire nature of the situation that threatens the very future of our planet.
The article blamed “congressional opposition” for thwarting President Obama’s effort to adopt “aggressive climate policies.” While many environmentalists have serious concerns about how “aggressive” the president has really been in this area, what is absolutely clear is that it is not “congressional opposition” that is blocking progress.
It is the fierce opposition by one political party, the fossil-fuel-funded Republican Party.
Not only does the Republican Party oppose efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, but most of its members also reject the science describing the reality of climate change.
