After an email from fellow expat blogger Betsy saying something along the lines of ” Why you no post, Amy?” and just updating 1-023941-023498 plugins, I’m finally writing this. And as you can tell from the title, I’m moving home. It wasn’t my choice really.
The government has closed applications to the Tier 1 (post-study work) visa category. (Thanks to those gosh darn Tories!)
Before I found out about the Tier 1 situation several months ago, I was having an extremely difficult time deciding what to do. Staying or leaving. I could go into all the details about getting a job offer and blah blah blah but it’s pretty pointless now.
Anyway, in November of last year I applied for a program in the U.S. called AmeriCorps NCCC. It’s like the Peace Corps, only domestic, and a whole lot less of a hassle to get into. I found out I was accepted in March and assigned to the Denver campus. Denver as in Colorado, and mountains, and hiking, and awesome! I accepted immediately as my Plan B. Little did I know at the time that it would quickly become my Plan A.
I’m heading home the beginning of July after a quick jaunt over to Croatia, Bosnia, & Montenegro and hopefully a few day trips here in the U.K. I’ll also be heading to N.Y.C. in July so it looks like I’ll have some nice blogging fodder for a while.
Come October you’ll be finding me in Denver for a month for C.T.I. (Corps Training Institute) and then god knows where across the U.S. doing things like disaster relief, youth work, and environmental protection. Cross your fingers for me that I won’t have to sleep in a tent for two weeks in the middle of winter (some former members have written about this on their blogs, yikes!).
Speaking of blogs, I might need a new blog. AmeriCorps NCCC doesn’t quite fit under the description ‘gloriously dismal’, but I’d kind of like to keep everything in the same place and not have one London blog and one AmeriCorps blog (because that’s an obnoxious amount of plugins to update every month!) Hmmm. *scratches chin* I’ll contemplate for a bit.
In the meantime, I’m soaking up the lovely windy & rainy weather here in London and packing for Dubrovnik.
Ta for now!
