Enriched Wheat Flour (Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Wheat Starch, Salt, Beef Fat, Hydrolyzed Soy, Wheat, And Corn Protein, Onion, Caramel Color, Corn Syrup Solids, Sodium Caseinate (Milk), Spices (Including White Pepper), Garlic, Natural Flavor, Disodium Inosinate And Guanylate (Flavor Enhancers), Extractives Of Paprika, And Yeast Extract.
Wow – doesn’t THAT sound yummy? Corn syrup solids? Flavor enhancers? Not to mention the 20 calories or 340mg of Sodium per TABLESPOON!
In case you haven’t figured it out – this is the nutritional information on the back of a very popular brand of dried gravy mix (brown). You know the one – just add water – ready in 5 minutes. Yeah – THAT one.
Quite a list of ‘stuff’ just to make some gravy isn’t it? Not only does the beef fat and sodium caseinate make it NOT vegan, the rest of the chemistry set makes it NOT very healthy either.
There is a better way to get your gravy fix, a healthier gravy I might add, and it still only takes just a few minutes to whip up a batch.

Nutritional Info
Just for grins and giggles, I plugged all the ingredients into MyFitnessPal to see how it compared to that ‘other’ kind.
I used King Arthur Whole Wheat Flour, Safeway Brand Low Sodium Soy Sauce, and Imagine Organic Low Sodium Veggie Broth. Not surprisingly at all, it’s only 62 calories per serving, 0g fat, 0mg cholesterol, and 362mg of sodium per serving. Plus we got some potassium, fiber, protein, a little calcium, and even some iron. Nice!
Usage
Uh – it’s gravy – you pour it on stuff and eat it
But seriously – I make this at least once a week and between the wife and I it’s usually gone in a few days.
One of our favorite meals is to nuke a Yukon Gold Potato (usually about 4 minutes), and make the gravy while the potato is cooking. After the potato is done, throw in a bag of Steamfresh Frozen Veggies (nuke the whole bag for 5 minutes). One the veggies are done, the gravy is usually done too (you did remember to stir – right? If you didn’t – you’ll only forget once – trust me).
And bam! What do you know? Dinner in under 15 minutes.
Nutritious, healthy, starch centered, and with a serving or two of veggies on the side. And don’t forget the yummy vegan gravy to top it all off.
So gee golly gosh good gravy! Let’s eat!
