‘Good Good Trouble’ Great Great for Kids Kids!

By Designerdaddy @DesignerDaddy

Jon and I recently embarked on an exciting father/son tropical adventure — to see a brand new family play, Good Good Trouble on Bad Bad Island!

This was only Jon’s second live theater experience, and this one was a bit more complex than the first. So I wasn’t completely sure how it would play out.

HA! Get it? PLAY out?!?

My apologies for the silly digression, but this show was chock full of fun, color, music and loads of silliness, along with a subtle message about “making family where you find it.” And did I mention the silliness?

Presented by the NextStop Theatre Company, and tucked away in their cozy 114-seat black box theater in Herndon, GGTOBBI transported us to this whimsical land full of absent-minded delivery turtles, giant rainbow-colored sea snakes and — Jon’s favorite — a depressed walrus that sits at home all day listening to Mozart and Streisand.

If you’ve met Jon or read this blog for very long, you know he’s a perpetual ball of energy most of the time. Yet as soon as the lights went down and the story began, he sat mesmerized throughout the entire 50-minute performance. At one point The Idol (think Wizard of Oz meets Gilligan’s Island) got a little overwhelming for my 4-year old, but he just crawled up in my lap and whispered in my ear to ask if he could touch it.

When the show ended, he got his chance! The cast came back out, handed out leis and signed posters, posed for photos and even gave Jon a tour of The Idol’s inner-workings. He left a happy adventurer!

Good Good Trouble on Bad Bad Island is a great way for families to beat the summer heat and entertain the kids with something that doesn’t involve a screen of some sort. If you go, please tell them Designer Daddy sent you!
