Zella Day wishes it were 1965. Raised in a log cabin in the mountains around the Phoenix valley, she honed her songwriting craft covering household favorites like Bob Dylan and Elvis at the coffee house/artist haven her parents owned, the only one around for miles. Now LA-based, Zella Day writes sultry, hook-doused pop songs with today’s rhythms and a 60s aesthetic that sweetly colors her sound. A while back, she nabbed our curiosity with an acoustic cover of “Seven Nation Army”, but now she’s released a few songs of her own that reveal a stunning gift.
Her bio describes her sound as floating “between the tonalities of female frontier-maker Stevie Nicks and art pop songbird Lana Del Rey,” the latter of which can be heard strongly in Zella Day’s latest single, “1965″. A perfect pairing with summertime, the track lays out her longing for the free-spirited atmosphere that thrived in 1965, a feeling she once found in a lover who has now gone away. Listen to “1965″ above and be sure to visit her SoundCloud page for another original stunner, “Sweet Ophelia”, as well as her White Stripes cover. Keep your eyes on this girl because it sounds like Zella Day is set for takeover.
