Drought drove them to behead people!
First, President Ebola insists that those beheaders of ISIL/ISIS, aka the Islamic State caliphate that’s wreaking destruction across the Middle East, are neither Islamic nor jihadist. (See “Obama announces U.S. ‘counterterrorism’ policy against ISIL“)
Now, a pair of academics at the City University of New York (CUNY) are blaming what used to be called global warming, now “climate change,” and overpopulation for the creation of those poor ISIS folk who are just trying to survive amidst parched lands.
In an article for the Huffington Post, “How Climate Change Helped ISIS,” history professor Charles Strozier and research associate Kelly Berkell at CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice, write that “As the Obama administration undertakes a highly public, multilateral campaign to degrade and destroy the militant jihadists known as ISIS, ISIL and the Islamic State, many in the West remain unaware that climate played a significant role in the rise of Syria’s extremists.”
“Many became climate refugees” from a four-year (2006-2010) drought in Syria that “devastated the livelihoods of 800,000 farmers and herders; and knocked two to three million people into extreme poverty.”
Strozier and Berkell continue: “While ISIS threatens brutal violence against all who dissent from its harsh ideology, climate change menaces communities (less maliciously) with increasingly extreme weather.”
The two academics call on Americans to consider the link between melting glaciers and a stronger Taliban: “If more Americans knew how glacial melt contributes to catastrophic weather in Afghanistan—potentially strengthening the Taliban and imperiling Afghan girls who want to attend school—would we drive more hybrids and use millions fewer plastic bags? How would elections and legislation be influenced?”

Neither Strozier or Berkell are climate scientists.
In addition to being a history professor, Charles Strozier, Ph.D. is a practicing psychotherapist in New York City’s Greenwich Village. He describes himself as “I am considered gay friendly.”
For her part, aside from being a “research associate” at John Jay College of Criminal Justice’s Center on Terrorism, Kelly A. Berkell is an attorney who had practiced securities and corporate litigation in Manhattan and Boston before moving into the public sector.
