If there’s one band I’m excited about at the moment/has been on repeat for me over the last couple of weeks, it’s Glass Animals. The almost unclassifiable British band dropped their first single “Gooey” on Valentines Day, and it’s since been cruising front pages of music sites all over the world. The whole song is beautifully damp-sounding with deep bass pads and echoing sound effects, while the lead male vocals have a quirky and slightly cheeky slyness to them. Combining elements of new age music similar to Alt-J, pop wooziness of Florence and the Machine and an eeriness of Radiohead, the band could be creating their own niche before our eyes.
It’s also worth noting that aside from the intensely innovative and beautiful music behind this track, the lyrics are brilliantly wacky. Managing to shape their lyrics around Pooh Bear and his “peanut butter vibes” is extravagant in itself. The band is the first to be signed to engineer Paul Epworth’s label Wolf Tone, and they’ve already gained attention from Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood, who booked them a sold out show in their hometown. Their EP is due for release on April 8th, but “Gooey” is available now for your listening pleasure.
