This year’s Mobile Voice Conference is all about getting personal with personal assistants. Our Director of Research, Dr. Marsal Gavaldà, has been invited to speak at the event, organized by the Applied Voice Input and Output Society. The goal of AVIOS's Mobile Voice is to “give voice” to trends in the speech technology space by providing an arena for industry experts to present on various speech-related topics. Another theme for this year's conference is to showcase how personal assistants are not confined to the Googles and Apples of the world, and is a technology that companies of all sizes can leverage.

Our Research Director’s talk is entitled, “The Evolution of Personal Assistants: from Science Fiction to Reality to the Transparent Brain.” In the presentation, Gavaldà will chronicle the history of the virtual assistant, and expound on its depictions in both reality and science fiction, from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Olimpia to Spike Jonze’s Her by way of the Uncanny Valley. He will also touch on new developments in the intelligent assistant space, including how contextually aware software can bring us closer to making personal assistants a little more personal.
