Get a Fresh Start for Spring – 5 Organizing and Decluttering Ideas

It’s that time of year again when the winter weather subsides and it’s time to do a little spring cleaning. The thing is, cleaning up around your home typically entails organizing parts of your life, and for many of us that organization is a struggle. If you have difficulty with organization, if your car looks more like a teenagers closet than a show room model, or if your idea of a filing system is a box full of papers, then, here are some ideas that can help.

Kid’s Rooms

Your children’s rooms are often the first place that gets cluttered every day. It doesn’t seem to matter if you have teenagers or toddlers; the floor is quickly filled with toys, books and clothes. How to declutter this space?

  • Buy an inexpensive book stand and then some brightly colored bins. Having these bins helps you collect toys and books quickly making tiding up fast. Also if the bins have a lid or are otherwise solid colored, they can accent a room’s décor.
  • Put a dresser in the closet. Often children’s clothes don’t need the full height that a closet provides and having a dresser in there will open up floor space.

Garages

Having a decluttered garage is all about using all the space you can find. Quite often, it is the use of the space around you that can make the difference between tripping over items and having floor space to walk around.

  • Suspend a large storage net in the corner of your garage. These are great for all the footballs, basketballs, etc. that are either sitting on the garage floor or wasting valuable shelf space.
  • Hang shelving with plastic storage bins. The shelving is great for boxes and cans of paint, and the storage bins are perfect for all that “stuff” that just won’t sit on the shelf without wasting space.
  • Hang your tools up on the wall. There are dozens of options – peg boards, hooks mounted on the wall, or any number of slat storage systems.

Cars

Your car can quickly become very cluttered thanks to all the things we do with them. From candy and gum wrappers to bank receipts to all the “stuff” you carry around for outdoor activities , it can be hard to keep them from being decluttered.

  • The first thing you should find is a cargo area organizer to arrange and organize the storage space in your vehicle. Some vehicle manufacturers sell cargo area organizers that are custom fit to your car.
  • Get a trash holder and a hook to mount it on. There are all sorts of cool little vehicle accessories that hang a small trash bin on an air vent, on a gear shift, etc. Of course, you can always get a hook with double-sided tape to mount under the dash at your local hardware store, and then hang empty grocery sacks there for trash disposal.

Having a clean, decluttered space will make you not only feel better, but be happier. Since so many of the ideas above are relatively easy to execute and inexpensive, make the commitment to work on them this Spring. Happy organizing!
