The Garden Grove Fire Department provides fire prevention, suppression, emergency medical services; hazardous materials release mitigation, and disaster preparedness coordination for a highly diverse population of over 172,000 and responds to approximately 11,000 calls per year.

The position of Utility Driver (Fire Intern) assists members of the fire department with various operational duties.

The ideal candidate will possess a positive attitude and be able to follow written and verbal instructions.

There are currently three (3) part-time vacancies. An eligibility list will be established from this recruitment to fill current and future vacancies for this position.

This is a part-time, at-will position that may work up to 18 hours a week. The duration of employment for this position may be no more than 18 months.

 Example of Duties:

Pick-up and deliver provisions to emergency staff on incidents;

Fuel vehicles of department command staff;

Deliver and pick-up mail between City Hall, headquarters, and stations;

Pick-up and deliver supplies and other department items;

Assist in community events, including presentations, demonstrations and tours for children, businesses and other groups;

Answer phones and greet visitors, as needed;

Assist with events and operations at North Net Fire Training Center, as needed;

Perform other duties as assigned.

 Requirements:

EDUCATION
Completion of high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent, and a California-accredited Basic Fire Academy are required.

KNOWLEDGE OF
California driving laws; safe work and driving practices.

ABILITY TO
Understand and follow verbal and written instructions; operate standard office equipment; safely operate a motor vehicle; and provide quality customer service to a diverse community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Incumbents in this classification must be able to walk, stand, climb, stoop, bend, lean, turn, twist, crouch, kneel, squat, push, pull, reach above and below shoulder level, use fingers and hands repetitively, lift and carry up to 50 lbs, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, drive a vehicle and operate motorized equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment described here is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Incumbents in this classification work with others and have direct contact with the public. Incumbents work around machinery, equipment and vehicles; and drive vehicles.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
California Class C driver’s license and good driving history.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Selection process will consist of:

  • Oral panel interview – tentatively scheduled for September 26, 2016.

DMV H6 INFORMATION **IMPORTANT INFORMATION – PLEASE READ**

In order to participate in the selection process, candidates must submit a valid DMV “H6″ driver’s license printout, which covers a candidate’s 10-year driving history with the DMV.

An acceptable driving record is one that has three (3) or fewer DMV points issued within the past five (5) years, and no more than one (1) DUI within the past ten (10) years.

Please note the following:

  • ONLY A VALID H6 DRIVER’S LICENSE PRINTOUT RECEIVED DIRECTLY FROM THE DMV OFFICE IS ACCEPTABLE. A minimal fee is required to obtain a H6 driver’s license printout. A complete report will include the word “END” at the end of the report and be printed on official DMV paper with the State of California seal on the report. Incomplete reports will NOT be accepted. Only the original report or a physical copy of the original report will be accepted.
  • INSURANCE COMPANY OR ONLINE DMV PRINTOUTS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
  • The printout must have been issued between June 2016 and September 2016.
  • NON-CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS MUST SUBMIT 10-YEAR DRIVING REPORTS FROM EVERY STATE THE APPLICANT HAS LIVED IN FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS (2006-2016).
  • All valid and complete DMV printouts will be REQUIRED at the time of application. Candidates who do not possess a valid H6 printout will not participate in the interviews and will be disqualified from the selection process.
