I’m not a fan of the OS but OUYA isn’t going to be the only Android -powered console. PlayJam, the global platform for casual and social games on Smart TV, raised funding on Kickstarter for GameStick, a new Android game console that fits in your pocket and started shipping developer kits this week.
What you see is what you get here… Billed as ”The Most Portable TV games Console Ever Created”, this $79 device is a 5 cm (2-inches) stick that fits inside its own controller that supports up to four controllers connected at once and can connect to gamepads, mouse and keyboard. Games are then played on a regular TV.
With this product, PlayJam seeks to combine the open source mobile platform with a closed console and bring that experience to your TV sets. The aim is to have no clunky hardware or entangling wires.
GameStick will run on Android Jelly Bean and pack an Amlogic 8726-MX processor (which is a dual-core Cortex A9 chip at 1.5GHz, along with a dual-core Mali 400 GPU at 400MHz), 1GB RAM and 8GB of flash storage, while using Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11b/g/n for connectivity. It will also be capable of full-HD (1080p) video decoding. OUYA console features an NVIDIA quad-core Tegra 3 processor for faster speeds.
It will be interesting to see how big a piece of the current game market Android based consoles will carve for themselves.
GameStick is scheduled to ship to early supporters in April this year.
