Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin will miss the next 6-to-8 weeks with an upper-body injury, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.
Malkin was injured in Friday night’s game against Columbus.
This season, Malkin is Pittsburgh’s second-leading goal (27) and point (58) scorer in 57 games played. His average of 1.02 points per contest is tied with teammate Sidney Crosby for the third-best mark in the NHL.
Earlier this year, the Penguins played 10-consecutive games without Malkin from Feb. 5-24, during which the team went 5-4-1. Historically, the Penguins have been able to find ways to compensate for Malkin’s absence, as their all-time record when he is injured is 70-45-9 (.601 pct.).
The Penguins battle the New York Rangers on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in a nationally televised contest on NBC. The game can also be heard on the Penguins’ official flagship station, 105.9 The X."

The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled forwards Dominik Simon and Conor Sheary from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.
Forward Tom Sestito has been re-assigned to WBS.
Simon, 21, has enjoyed a successful debut in North America, registering 18 goals, 20 assists and 38 points in 54 games. He is the ninth-leading scorer among all AHL rookies.
The 5-foot-11, 176-pound native of Prague, Czech Republic was one of four WBS players selected to play in the AHL All-Star Classic earlier this year. Sunday afternoonagainst the Rangers, he will be looking to make his NHL debut.
Simon was selected by the Penguins in the fifth round (137th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft last summer in Sunrise, Florida. When he debuts, Simon will join fellow Penguins’ Class of ’15 member Daniel Sprong playing in the NHL this year. Thus far, only five players from the 2015 NHL Draft have logged NHL action at any point this year: Sprong, Edmonton’s Connor McDavid, Buffalo’s Jack Eichel, Carolina’s Noah Hanifin and Colorado’s Mikko Rantanen.
Last May, Simon had a breakout performance at the 2015 World Championship, where he played on a line with Jaromir Jagr for the Czech Republic. Simon, who finished with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games, was the youngest player on that squad, and Jagr the oldest.
Before coming to North America, Simon played the past two years for HC Plzen in the Czech Extraliga. Last year, Simon was third on the club with 30 points (18G-12A) in 52 games. HC Plzen is owned by former Penguins player Martin Straka.
Sheary, 23, has spent numerous stints with Pittsburgh this year, contributing five points (3G-2A) in 29 NHL contests.
Sheary has 36 points (7G-29A) in 30 AHL games with WBS."
