"Starting pitchers can't help having their performances reflected in their team's offense. Take the Pirates' A.J. Burnett, who Tuesday night will face the Giants' Chris Heston in the middle game of the teams' AT&T Park series.
Burnett received plaudits as a Pitcher of the Month candidate after going 5-0 with an ERA of 1.82 in May. But he wasn't getting any notice during an April when he was winless in four starts -- with an even lower 1.80 ERA. Ah, the difference made by getting only a total of four runs' support in April, versus 36 in May.
Looking to keep Burnett's support in check will be Heston, whose five wins lead all Major League rookie pitchers. All told, the Giants have won seven of Heston's 10 starts, and he has a 2.16 ERA in five home starts.
Things to know about this game
• The Bucs have a poor track record in first meetings with pitchers, which continued Sunday night in San Diego as Odrisamer Despaigne went a career-long eight innings in a 7-1 victory over them.
• The May ledger reflected the second 5-0 month of Burnett's career, and both have come in the 17-year veteran's relatively brief tenure in Pittsburgh; he was also 5-0 in June 2012.
• The Giants are looking for their first series win over the Pirates since April 13-15, 2012.
