A day removed from the much-anticipated matchup between Matt Harvey and A.J. Burnett, the Mets and Pirates look to left-handers in the series finale on Sunday at PNC Park.
Jon Niese will try to help the Mets salvage the finale, while fellow southpaw Francisco Liriano looks to lead the Pirates to a three-game sweep. Both starters have much to prove after disappointing performances last time out.
Niese, who boasted two wins and a 1.50 ERA after his first three starts of the season, hit a rough patch in his most recent occasion on the bump, surrendering eight earned runs on 11 hits in five innings of work on Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Liriano didn't have his best stuff in his last start either. The nine-year veteran was jettisoned from the hill after just two innings against the Twins. He gave up seven earned runs after allowing five hits, including two home runs.
Three things to know about this game:
• Power hasn't necessarily been the forte of Pirates catchers this season -- Pittsburgh doesn't have a home run produced by one of its backstops.
Pirates catchers have still made an impact at the plate, though.
Recently, Chris Stewart, plugged into the lineup on Friday to catch for starter Gerrit Cole, provided an RBI double in the series opener against the Mets.
Meanwhile, starting catcher Francisco Cervelli has hit safely in seven of his last eight starts. His season batting average is .287.
• Andrew McCutchen has not only performed well at PNC Park -- he's hit the most home runs in the stadium's history -- but he's also experienced success against the Mets, specifically.
Dating back to 2013, McCutchen has hit safely in each of his last 10 games against New York. During the streak, he's hitting .417 (15-for-36) with eight runs scored.
• Mets third baseman Eric Campbell has had a rough go of it recently.
Campbell, who batted second in the order in five of the Mets' previous six games, hit sixth in New York's lineup on Saturday. Campbell went 0-for-4 and is hitless in his last 19 at-bats with seven strikeouts.
