"Pirates welcome Reds targeting WC home-field edge
By Adam Berry / MLB.com | + 0 COMMENTS
After falling out of the National League Central race on Wednesday, the Pirates will turn their attention on Friday toward securing home-field advantage for next week's win-or-go-home date with the Cubs.
The Bucs and Reds will wrap up the regular season this weekend at PNC Park, kicking off a three-game series at 7:05 p.m. ET on Friday night.
The Cardinals claimed their third straight division title by beating the Pirates on Wednesday night, officially ending a race that lasted 159 games. The Pirates lead the Cubs by two games in the Wild Card standings.
The two clubs will meet Oct. 7 in the NL Wild Card Game presented by Budweiser. The only thing left to determine is location; the Bucs' "magic number" to ensure the game will be played in Pittsburgh is down to two.
They will try to lower that number on Friday night behind left-hander Francisco Liriano; the Bucs have won 15 of his last 16 starts. Right-hander Keyvius Sampson will start for the Reds, who have already captured the season series by beating the Pirates 10 times in 16 prior matchups.
Three things to know about this game
• Liriano has been at his best after receiving extra rest, as he did before each of his last two starts. Facing the Dodgers and Cubs on the road, he allowed two runs and struck out 18 over 14 2/3 innings combined and picked up a pair of wins.
• Sampson has struggled in three matchups (two starts) against the Pirates this season. The rookie righty is 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA against the Bucs despite holding them to a .195 average.
• Right-hander A.J. Burnett and lefty J.A. Happ are scheduled to follow Liriano in the Pirates' rotation this weekend. It will be the final regular-season start of Burnett's career, as he is set to retire at the end of this season, but both likely follow Liriano in the Division Series rotation should they advance past the Cubs.
The game is available to stream free out of market on MLB.TV, presented by AT&T. Blackout restrictions apply.
