With their fifth straight win on Wednesday night at Coors Field, the Pirates secured a spot in the postseason for a third straight year, but their work is far from done. They'll send Jeff Locke to the mound seeking a four-game sweep of the Rockies on Thursday trailing the Cardinals by four games in the National League Central with 10 games to play.
Chad Bettis, who is 8-5 with a 4.46 ERA, will take the mound for the Rockies. Bettis is 2-0 with 0.75 ERA over his past two starts. Since the righty returned from the disabled list with right elbow inflammation on Aug. 25, the Rockies have won four of his five starts. Overall, they are 12-6 when Bettis takes the mound.
Locke, who is 8-11 with a 4.48 ERA overall, will be making his career-high-tying 30th start. He has made six of his past eight starts on the road, where he's 4-7 with a 5.69 ERA in 14 starts.
Things to know about this game
• Pirates outfielder Starling Marte, who stole his 29th base on Wednesday, is two homers shy of becoming the ninth player in franchise history with at least 20 steals and 20 homers in the same season. The last to do it was Andrew McCutchen in 2013, with 21 homers and 27 stolen bases.
• Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez has eight hits in his last 46 at-bats and a .260 average on the season, the lowest it has been since he was hitting .258 on July 22.
• Rockies reliever Justin Miller has allowed one hit, one run and one walk with 15 strikeouts in his past 10 appearances, totaling 9 1/3 innings. The hit was a home run by the Padres' Jedd Gyorko, the only homer yielded by Miller in 29 innings this season.
