"Bucs face Rox with potential to clinch playoff berth
By Jack Etkin / Special to MLB.com | + 0 COMMENTS
The Pirates continue their march toward the postseason on Tuesday at Coors Field, as J.A. Happ faces the Rockies' Chris Rusin in a battle of left-handers. Pittsburgh's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is two after a 9-3 win in Monday night's series opener.
Happ has won five of his past six decisions with a 1.24 ERA in that six-start span and has gone 5-2 with a 1.96 ERA in eight starts with the Pirates, while Rusin is 4-2 with a 4.74 ERA in 10 games (eight starts) at Coors Field and 5-8, 5.11 overall. He has thrown the Rockies' only two nine-inning complete games this season, both at home.
The Pirates will secure at least a National League Wild Card berth with a win and a loss by both the Giants and Nationals. San Francisco faces San Diego on the road, while Washington hosts Baltimore. The Cubs, leading for the second Wild Card spot, also won on Monday and remain two games behind the Pirates. Chicago hosts Milwaukee on Tuesday.
Things to know about this game
• Only two active Rockies have extra-base hits off Happ. Brandon Barnes is 1-for- 2 and Jose Reyes is 2-for-21, each with a double off the left-hander.
Andrew McCutchen has reached base safely in 28 of his past 29 games, dating back to Aug. 21.
• The Rockies are 9-28 (.243) when facing left-handed starting pitchers this season, by far the worst record of any Major League team. The A's are next to last with a 14-28 (.333) record against left-handed starters.
