"Burnett, Bucs put sights on playoffs vs. Rox

Eight years after taking the Colorado Rockies on a memorable ride into and through the postseason, Clint Hurdle hopes to be in the center of another celebration in Denver. His Pirates hit Coors Field on Monday to open a four-game series with a playoff-clinching magic number of 3, which stands a good chance of hitting zero by Thursday.
A.J. Burnett will lead off the series against rookie right-hander Jon Gray, who will face the Bucs for the first time. Burnett is on the verge of a noteworthy event of his own: With 2,494 career strikeouts, he is eight shy of tying the legendary Christy Mathewson for 31st place on MLB's all-time list.
Clinching a postseason berth in Colorado, where he managed the Rockies from 2003 to mid-2009, would mean little to Hurdle, who doesn't even embrace being recognized as the only manager to take the Rockies to the World Series.
"The memories are priceless, but you move on. It's always nice to go in there and see that flag," Hurdle said, "but, for their sake, I hope they can put another one up there one of these days."
Things to know about this game
• As a visiting manager. Hurdle is 5-7 at Coors Field, including 1-5 the last two seasons.
"What we've done in the past has no influence on what we do now. But it has been challenging," Hurdle said.
• Since his July 27 trade to the Rockies, Jose Reyes is 29-for-84 (.342) at Coors Field.
• This series will wrap up the Pirates' schedule against the NL West. They are 23-6 versus the division, including 10-3 on the road.
