"Pirates, Dodgers to continue playoff pushes in series finale
By Tom Singer / MLB.com | + 1 COMMENTS
The Pirates have been staggered by having to run through a gauntlet of opposition ace pitchers. On Sunday, they get to unleash their own, Gerrit Cole.
Cole, seeking his 17th win when he'll face Dodgers righty Mike Bolsinger in Dodger Stadium, will be out to pull the Bucs back from the precipice of falling out of second place in the National League Central for the first time since June 2. The Pirates have also held the top NL Wild Card seed that goes with that standing, but both are being threatened by the Cubs, who sit one game back of Pittsburgh in the standings.
Although the Dodgers hold a wide NL West lead while the Pirates trail Central Division leader St. Louis by a considerable margin, oddly enough both teams are comparably close to clinching a postseason spot. The Dodgers' Magic Number for clinching the NL West is 7, the Pirates' to lock up a Wild Card spot is 4 -- both over the Giants.
Three things to know about this game
• Cole is undefeated in four career decisions in his home state of California: One win each in San Francisco, San Diego, Anaheim and Los Angeles.
• Bolsinger will be making his first career start against the Bucs; he is 6-0 with a 2.55 ERA against sub-.500 teams, compared to 0-3 with a 4.40 ERA against teams above .500.
• Carl Crawford should return to the starting lineup after the Dodgers had faced consecutive lefty starters; Crawford has dealt with back and lingering hamstring issues, but manager Don Mattingly said he is completely healthy and ready to go.
