"Morton looking to help Bucs trim NL Central deficit
By Adam Berry / MLB.com | + 4 COMMENTS
With less than a month remaining in the regular season, the Pirates are looking to put some pressure on the Cardinals in the National League Central race. To do so on Friday night, they'll have to get past a division rival who's given them trouble all year.
Brewers right-hander Jimmy Nelson will take the mound as Pittsburgh and Milwaukee meet for the second installment of a four-game series at PNC Park. Nelson has stymied the Pirates all year, going 4-1 with a 1.72 ERA in five career starts against the Bucs.
Nelson has been even more effective at PNC Park, going 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA. He'll oppose right-hander Charlie Morton, who has also been effective -- 5-2 with a 3.00 ERA -- in nine starts at home this season.
Things to know about this game
• The Pirates have gone 9-0-1 in their last 10 series at home.
• Don't expect to see catcher Jonathan Lucroy back in the Brewers' lineup yet, as he is still feeling symptoms of a concussion. Backup Martin Maldonado has an encouraging track record against Morton anyway, having gone 4-for-5 with two walks in seven plate appearances.
• Morton has held current Brewers hitters in check for the most part, as they've hit a combined .205 off him in 132 plate appearances. But the righty has struggled to contain Ryan Braun, who is 8-for-23 with three doubles and a home run off Morton.
