"Cards, Bucs stick with approach in big series

Outsiders -- fans and media -- may be captivated by the consequential ongoing series between the dynastic Cardinals and the Pirates, who are 5 1/2 games back and trying to stage a National League Central rebellion. The teams' respective managers, however, almost resentfully read from the same script.
"So what, are we gonna play harder than we have all year, with more urgency?" mused Buccos skipper Clint Hurdle. "Take care of tonight's game -- I'm always reminding our guys of that."
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny joined the one-game-at-a-time chorus, while understanding why September games between contenders generate disproportionate interest.
"For us to change how we've gone about it [and build this series up] would be crazy," Matheny said. "We get that there is a lot of build up to this, and hopefully there is a buzz in this stadium all weekend long and into next week."
The Bucs will be getting their first look in three years at lefty Jaime Garcia, whose track record against Pittsburgh may be dated, but is solid. In three career starts against the Pirates, he has allowed only two earned runs in 21 1/3 innings. Yet he won only one of those gems, being outpitched in the others. Trying to deal him the same fate will be Charlie Morton -- who has a lifetime record of 2-10 versus the Cardinals.
Three things to know about this game
• Jon Jay opened his first game off the disabled list on the Cardinals' bench -- he entered the game in the sixth inning -- but is likely to be introduced to the starting lineup Saturday night. Jay was 5-for-13 on his rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis, completing his recovery from a left wrist stress reaction.
• Although it is no longer an official MLB stat, it is worth nothing that the Bucs' Starling Marte owns 15 game-winning RBIs this season -- already three more than Russell Martin's team-leading 12 of last season.
• Garcia, who won the first game of a career often derailed by injury on Aug. 5, 2008, will be going for his 50th victory.
