"Rolling with Pirates, Happ sizes up Rockies

Cloaked in black and gold and represented by a swashbuckler and a skull-and-crossbones, left-hander J.A. Happ has found his aggression since joining the postseason-contending Pirates.
Through his first 22 appearances, 21 with the Mariners and a maiden voyage with the Pirates, Happ was 4-7 with a 4.78 ERA. But in his last three starts, Happ has given up one run in 17 1/3 innings and the Pirates have won all three. Happ wants to carry this form into Saturday night's start against the Rockies at PNC Park.
"I'm just kind of getting back to me being aggressive in the strike zone and trying to get ahead of hitters," Happ said. "We tried to work on a few things, minor mechanics-wise, then mentally to just trying to keep that aggression, keep that focus and that confidence in every pitch and throw with conviction.
"For whatever reason, pitchers sometimes get away from that, I know I did, but it's nice to get back in the right frame of mind and feel good about being out there."
Three things to know about this game
• The Rockies counter with lefty Chris Rusin, who has experienced extremes in his last two starts. He threw a five-hit shutout, with one walk and four strikeouts, against the Padres at Coors Field on Aug. 16. Last Saturday, he became the fifth starter in club history to give up 11 earned runs -- the first since Jeff Fassero in 2004 -- in two-plus innings of a loss to the Mets.
• Aramis Ramirez had 17 RBIs in his first 27 games with the Pirates since being acquired from the Brewers on July 23.
• Going into Friday's series opener, a game he did not start, Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon was on a 21-for-48 (.438) tear, with two home runs.
