The Marlins will tie a club record for most starting pitchers in a season on Wednesday night, when they send lefty Chris Narveson to the mound for his first Major League start since 2012. The Pirates, against whom Narveson has fared well in the past, counter with Jeff Locke.
Narveson, 33, is replacing Kendry Flores in the rotation after the rookie went to the disabled list on Tuesday. In turn, the former Brewer is making his first big league start since missing all of 2013 with an injury and pitching in Japan in '14. While Narveson (1-0, 3.86 ERA) has made six relief appearances with the Marlins this season, he's 4-0 with a 2.97 ERA in six career outings vs. the Pirates.
Locke (6-8, 4.56 ERA), meanwhile, has a 3.08 ERA in his career vs. Miami despite being just 2-2. The lefty went 5 2/3 scoreless innings and beat the Marlins on May 26 at PNC Park.
Things to know about this game
• Narveson becomes the 13th different starting pitcher to go for the Marlins this season. That matches the franchise record they set last year.
• Locke has been battered on the road this season, compiling a 6.02 ERA in 10 outings. However, the Pirates are still 13-11 in his 24 starts this year.
• Pirates first baseman Michael Morse is 6-for-9 with three home runs and two doubles in his career against Narveson. The three homers are tied for the most he's hit against any pitcher, as the slugger has also taken Derek Lowe deep three times.
