"Leake set for return in clash against Cole, Pirates
By John McGonigal / MLB.com | + 2 COMMENTS
Right-hander Mike Leake will come off the 15-day disabled list and make his second start with the Giants when they square off against Gerrit Cole and the Pirates on Saturday at PNC Park.
Leake, who was acquired from the Reds on July 31, sustained a left hamstring strain and was placed on the DL on Aug. 7. The righty is set for his first outing since Aug. 2, when Leake (9-6, 3.52 ERA) made his Giants debut with 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball in a 2-1 loss to the Rangers.
Leake's return comes at an opportune time for San Francisco. The 27-year-old has pitched well against Pittsburgh this year, going 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA in three matchups. Leake also totes a 2.54 ERA in 12 career starts at PNC Park.
Things to know about this game
• Cole's command hasn't been sharp recently, and his 4.70 ERA in August is indicative of that. However, the 24-year-old right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.11 ERA in three career starts against the Giants.
• Newly acquired outfielder Marlon Byrd made an impact immediately on Friday night, homering in his first at-bat with the Giants. He could be in for more of the same against Cole. Byrd is a career .500 hitter (8-for-16) against Cole with two home runs and five RBIs.
• Leake couldn't be more familiar with Pittsburgh's lineup. Out of the four hitters he's faced the most in his career, three are current Pirates -- Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker and Pedro Alvarez. The combined averages of McCutchen, Walker, Alvarez, Aramis Ramirez, Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco against Leake is .228.
