NEW ORLEANS – QB Drew Brees’ eight-yard touchdown toss to WR Lance Moore with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter sealed the 20-10 victory for the New Orleans Saints over the Steelers at the Louisiana Superdome. The Steelers fell to 5-2 on the season with the loss, while the Saints improved to 5-3.
Both teams struggled moving the football as neither one scored in the first quarter. K Jeff Reed got the Steelers on the board early in the second quarter connecting from 19-yards out for a 3-0 lead. The Saints though would tie the game 3-3 with only eight seconds left before halftime on K Garrett Hartley’s 31-yard field goal.
On the Saints’ first possession of the second half, Brees led the offense on a 12-play, 51-yard drive that was capped off by Hartley’s 23-yard field goal that increased their lead 6-3. Early in the fourth quarter Brees found WR Marques Colston for a 16-yard touchdown to put the Saints up 13-3. However, on the Steelers’ ensuing drive RB Rashard Mendenhall found a seam and went 38 yards untouched into the end zone to cut the lead to 13-10. Mendenhall finished the game with 15 carries for 71 yards and one touchdown.
The Saints looked poised to add to their lead on their next drive when Brees found WR Robert Meachem for a 50-yard gain, which set the Saints up at the Steelers’ 26-yard line. But two plays later, CB Bryant McFadden sacked Brees and forced a fumble that was recovered by LB LaMarr Woodley, and the Steelers took over at the Saints’ 27-yard line.
The Steelers had the momentum and were marching into Saints’ territory, but a costly turnover sealed the Steelers’ fate. QB Ben Roethlisberger found TE Heath Miller for 20-yard gain, but Miller was hit hard and fumbled the football. The Saints then marched 55 yards for the game-clinching touchdown pass by Brees. Brees finished the game 34-of-44 for 305 yards and two touchdowns.
The Steelers’ rush defense continued its dominance, allowing a season-low 30 yards rushing. The defense as a whole had two sacks, a forced fumble and an interception. The Steelers’ offense though struggled, only having 279 total yards (108 rushing, 195 passing).
