"Happ, Ray to duel as Bucs, D-backs wrap up set

D-backs slugger Paul Goldschmidt is having his way with pitchers this year -- especially left-handers -- something southpaw J.A. Happ and the Pirates will surely be focused on in the finale between the clubs on Wednesday at PNC Park. Left-hander Robbie Ray will get the start for Arizona after Tuesday's 15-inning marathon won by the Bucs.
Goldschmidt has 22 home runs and 88 RBIs while boasting a .386 batting average with seven home runs against left-handers.
Happ, meanwhile, has actually yielded a better batting average to left-handed hitters (.310) than right-handers (.281). But the 32-year-old has allowed 12 of his 14 home runs to right-handed hitters this year. In two starts since being traded from the Blue Jays to the Bucs, Happ is 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA.
Opposite Happ will be Ray, who's 3-8 with a 3.29 ERA and has struggled in August, allowing 10 earned runs in just 15 1/3 innings over three starts.
Three things to know about this game
• Injured Pirates starter A.J. Burnett, whose spot in the rotation is currently occupied by Happ, continues to make strides in his recovery from a flexor strain in his right elbow. Burnett has not yet thrown a full bullpen session, but he is working toward that, as he was scheduled to throw from the bottom of the mound slope and about halfway up on Tuesday.
• Ray has the highest WAR among Arizona starters (1.1).
• Happ has struggled mightily in the first and second innings this season, carrying a 7.42 ERA, with opponents hitting .344 against him. Overall, he's 4-7 with a 4.64 ERA.
