"Niese looks to keep rolling as Mets face Pirates
By Alden Woods / MLB.com | + 12 COMMENTS
Prior to this three-game series, the Mets told fans to arrive early and take public transportation if possible. The fervor around Citi Field might be at a season high, as two legitimate National League playoff contenders continue their fight for footing. Saturday, it'll be the Mets' Jonathon Niese and the Pirates' Charlie Morton taking the mound.
Niese, who's been a steady producer behind the Mets' top-end trio of starters, is 7-9 with a 3.46 ERA this season. Since the start of June, he's recorded a quality start in 10 of his 12 outings.
Morton is 7-4 with a 4.48 ERA this season. The first inning has been his biggest opponent this season, as he's allowed 17 runs in 14 combined opening innings this season.
Three things you need to know about this game
• The Mets might get Lucas Duda back in their lineup, but his status is still uncertain as he fights off a lumbar strain that has kept him out all week. Duda said Friday that playing Saturday was a possibility, but it'll be touch-and-go up until the lineup is announced.
• Pirates third baseman Aramis Ramirez will start working out at first base this weekend, marking the first time he's even tried another position in his Major League career. He probably won't feature at first in New York, but the Pirates are working out how to adjust to the future return of Josh Harrison.
• Pirates superstar Andrew McCutchen has pounded the ball against Niese. In 15 career at-bats, McCutchen is hitting .467 with a home run and three doubles. No player with more than three at-bats against Niese has found more success against him.
