National League Cy Young Award candidates Clayton Kershaw and Gerrit Cole headline a marquee matchup as the Dodgers and Pirates begin a three-game series at 7:05 p.m. ET on Friday at PNC Park.
It'll be a battle of league leaders, as Cole leads the Majors in wins (14) and Kershaw has been the strikeout king, leading all pitchers with 192. Cole (2.29) and Kershaw (2.37) also rank third and fifth in the NL, respectively, in ERA.
Put simply, runs might be at a minimum.
Three things to know about this game
• The Pirates have dominated the NL West this season, recording three sweeps in four series against the division. In 13 matchups, Pittsburgh has an 11-2 record and a 56-36 run advantage.
• Although it's a small sample size, Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig has prospered when facing Cole. In six at-bats against him, Puig has five hits, including two doubles.
• Expect Chris Stewart to start once again for the Pirates. Stewart, who has a .284 batting average, has caught Cole's last 15 starts. The two have great chemistry, and it helps, too, that Stewart has thrived against Kershaw. In 12 at-bats against him, Stewart has six hits, one of which was a solo homer.
