The Reason I Dressed
For my son’s second birthday we planned a 6 day trip to Rome, day 1 was the Rome BioParco, which is a beautiful zoo/garden. Read all about it here.
I’m not the biggest Zoo fan, but I AM the biggest hypocrite!! And by that I mean, that I know there is something fundamentally wrong with taking animals out of their natural habitat to put them on display for the viewing pleasure of myself and my family, and I feel their suffering….but at the same time if there is a Zoo, Aquarium, BioDome, Nature Park or some other live animal related thing to see in a new city I’m visiting, you can bet that I’ll make my way there.
ESPECIALLY now that I have a kid.
A kid who loves animals.
He loves the “poo poo” (hippo), the “coo coo D” (crocodile) the “Zeeza” (zebra), the “monk” (monkey), the “Sharkie” (applies to seals, walrus’ and sharks) and ALL other cute animal abbreviations that he’s learning to say now.
How could I not bring him to the Rome Bio Park??
You may remember from this post that I asked my friend Karina to help me with a list of places to take young children in Rome. She came up with this fantastic list of 5 places to go with young kids and I actually managed to visit a few of them!
One of my best Canadian friends now lives in Rome and so I’ve been many times and already seen the major monuments. This trip was supposed to be about things to do in Rome with my 2 year old son that he would actually enjoy and not just sit through.
We managed to be in Rome during the ONE WEEK of the entire year when it rained almost everyday and was relatively “cold”.
I’ll be posting on Wednesday a packing list if you are going to Europe for three weeks but don’t want to dress like a tourist!! I was shocked to see so many tourists in Rome wearing open toe shoes, tank tops and sun dresses, while Gillian and I were in coats, closed toe shoes and pants!!
If you want to dress like an Italian you must:
- Keep a small sweater with you at all times to wear or put around your shoulders
- Have sun glasses available
- have a light cotton scarf around your neck at all times
- Never wear sandals before June!
I know, it sounds crazy, but this is just how Italians dress. I overheard a tourist in a tank top say “it just doesn’t make sense, it shouldn’t be this cold in Rome, not considering where the city is located”
Oh believe me it can get cold in Italy, I remember when it even SNOWED in Rome a few years ago. In March and April rain is a given, so prepare to layer, bring an umbrella and wear closed toe shoes! There’s no better way to ruin a vacation then with a cold!
What I Wore
I wore a thrifted child’s sweater, cotton shirt, Stefanel robe coat (I wrote about it here) chelsea boots and H&M rolled cotton pants.
