Friends Season 3, Episode 2 “The one where no one is ready”
Joey: I’m not wearing any underwear now.
Ross: Okay, then why do you have to wear underwear tonight?
Joey: It’s a rented tux. Okay? I’m not gonna go commando in another man’s fatigues.
There’s a picture of me in my high school yearbooks doing aerobics (does anyone else remember the 20 minute workout?) that would no doubt come back to haunt me should by some happenstance I become famous.
I’m not embarrassed about doing aerobics. It was all the rage in the 80’s, nor am I self-conscious by my neon tennis shoes or sideways ponytail (again all the rage!), no my source of mortification is more common than that.
I have huge lumpy panty lines under my leotard that tell the world “Yes she’s wearing granny panties!”.
Kerry O’Brien was your average working woman toiling for a PR company, but she had a dream. A dream about comfortable quality underwear. Relocating to the rustic splendor of Vermont, O’Brien was determined to find a way make seamless underwear, with no waistband, no trim, nothing but soft, stretchy, comfy microfiber that laid perfectly flat against the skin and seemed to disappear beneath clothes, hence her slogan, “it’s better than nothing!”
She succeeded “Every manufacturer I called told me that fabric would unravel if I didn’t have them, but I refused to accept that. I was bumped from one expert to another to another. And I didn’t stop until I found what I wanted.”
And Commando underwear was born featuring Commando’s signature invisible edges and luxe fabrications, in silhouettes guaranteed to deliver a dig-free fit, line-free look and make your butt beautiful.
Commando underwear has since expanded to other products, swimwear, tops, slips and accessories. My personal fave has to be the shapewear. Seamless lightweight microfiber with the trademark invisible edges, managing to smooth without strangling, it stays comfortable all day long
She then applied that idea to her legwear line finding a way to marry her patent underwear fabric to hosiery. “All the innovation in hosiery was going to shaping not comfort.”
Recently O’Brien was featured in Marlo Thomas book about inspiring women entitled “It Aint Over Til Its Over”. In it, she explains in it her business philosophy for Commando is incredible simple but very logical.
“I’m not actually obsessed with underwear,” she says. “I’m obsessed with comfort.”
