Four Awesome Family and Children's Programs at SAMA
I have to say that it has taken me six years, but I have totally re-discovered the San Antonio Museum of Art, and I am loving it!
I feel like there is so much of our big world to see, and the more I can expose my children to different sites, cultures and textures, the more connected they are to this world. And the more tolerant and receptive they will be to others, as they grow.
The San Antonio Museum of Art is so welcoming to children, it has four awesome family programs going on right now!
Art Crawl - For babies 0 to 18 months, every second Thursday, from 10-10:45am. Bring your bebe to the museum for a gallery tour, specifically designed for you and your little one to engage. Front-carrying carriers and strollers are welcomed. And...this great event ends with playtime and refreshments! Free with admission.
SAMA Playdates - For toddlers, ages 2 to 4, every Wednesdays at 10-11am, your toddlers can get an hands on experience at the gallery with activities, movement, music and fun! Free with admission.
First Sundays for Families - For all ages, from 1-5pm, children and families can explore the museum and participate in ongoing craft activities, art workshops, storytelling, theater and tours. This is free museum admission, children 12 and under are free.
Here's a little tip: Sunday, the museum is free for everyone from 10-12 noon, so you can pop in during those times and stay for the First Sunday for Families event!
The upcoming dates are:
  • March 3 - Celebrate Contemporary Art Month
  • April 7 - Exhibition Kickoff - Pasi贸n Popular
  • May 5 - Japanese Children's Day Celebration
  • June 2 - Animals Around the World

These are some pics from our recent visit to the First Sunday for Families event! The bird's eve view of the event is in the title picture.

Family Flicks - Every 2nd Saturday at sundown. Bring your chairs, blankets and picnics for an outdoor film. Enjoy special performances and art activities one hour before the screening, too!
The upcoming dates are:
  • February 9 - White Lion, 2010 (Africa)
  • March 9 - The Secret of Kells, 2009 (Ireland)
  • April 13 - Duma, 2005 (South Africa)
So as you can see, there is lots going on at SAMA. I hope you get a chance to make it. And if you need a little enticing, just tell them there's a samurai in the museum. It's always a must see before we leave!
