The global economic crisis has affected everyone. There were more than 2.3 million homeowners that faced foreclosure proceedings last year, an 81 percent increase from 2007. The numbers could soar higher depending on the severity of the recession.
The crisis has affected dogs as well. I have seen posts on craigslist, petfinder and various rescue organizations that received an alarming rate of owners surrendering their pets. When an owner loses his job, his home and has to move to an apartment where they do not take in pets. It’s an excruciatingly tough decision to make.
It’s a messy situation but everyone has to remain strong and optimistic. It’s a very controversial topic. Some people would say, how can you surrender your cat or dog, It’s like giving up one of your children. I totally agree, but what can we do to help?
I hope that there are rescues and volunteer’s that are willing to foster these foreclosed pets and are able to return them to their owners once they are able to take care of them again. If you are in a stable situation and wish to help, please check craigslist > choose your local city > community > pets and you will see countless lists of abandoned dogs, strays, and people that are surrendering their pets. It’s a sad reality that I hope we can find a solution for.
