Five Ways to Style Your Shorts

Before I get into today’s post, I want to share a little bit about what my closed Facebook Community is doing to make a difference in the world.

Some people wonder why I charge a small membership of $4.99 a month (with a free 30-Day trial) to belong. Part of this small fee is to help offset the cost of me participating as much as I do. When members ask questions, seek advice or look for recommendations, in addition to the vibrant community, I make my expertise accessible to the group. This takes time, time I thoroughly enjoy, but time, nonetheless.

Our Facebook Community Supports Organizations and Causes Doing Good in the World

Next, 1/2 of these earnings made through subscription fees is donated to fashion-related organizations making a difference in the world, including fashion sustainability, inclusivity, human rights issues, and more. Each month I select a different organization where the money gets donated. For June, we donated to Transcend Charlotte. This month, the group is supporting Responsibility in Fashion. If an organization or cause contradicts a member’s values or beliefs, they can bow out of using their subscription fee as a donation that month, no questions asked.

If being able to collectively make a difference isn’t a deciding factor, come for the community, fashion advice from relatable women, and positive spirit. In the past year, this group has grown into one of the most inclusive, supportive and friendly fashion-based Facebook Groups around. Imagine a place where women share similar fashion trials and struggles gather in a place that empowers each member to be their best; where a woman never feels silly or alone for asking a question about their style, wardrobe or fashion sense. This is a place where posting an outfit photo isn’t met with judgment or harsh criticism but met with members encouraging and cheering each other on. Yeah, we’re pretty awesome. So, please, come on in! Take the first step here.

Thanks for listening to that little PSA.

Five Ways to Style Your Shorts

Okay, shorts. So, interesting little tidbit: I really assumed most women don’t wear shorts. Shorts seemed to have become the “unless it is as hot as the surface of the sun, I don’t wear them” garments. With so many other options, like summer dresses and skirts, why would anyone wear shorts? So, I posted this question as an Instastory and was shocked to get this response. There is a slight margin of error, as I noticed my 11 and 16-year-old nieces weighed in. But, even taking them out of the equation, 81% is still pretty high. I expected it to be the other way around.

With this new information, I felt good about doing this post on shorts. Clearly, women are wearing them…if they are wearing them well is another story. Get inspired with these outfit ideas.

Paper bag shorts are very popular this summer. Wearing them may take some t-shirt finagling, either tucking or wearing a cropped t-shirt, something you may not be used to. The tie waist works casually and can be dressed up to make them look a bit more polished.

I styled these chambray striped shorts from Madewell with a bright pink t-shirt from Halogen, denim jacket from AG, slip-on sneakers from Frye, and blue wristlet from Dagne Dover.

A client recently bought this boxy blouse from Everlane and I really liked it. It’s an easy summer blouse that elevates a look beyond a summer tee. I styled it with a pair of brick colored shorts from Lands’ End, a pair of mint green sandals from Naturalizer and bottle green tote from Everlane. To finish the look, I added these drop earrings from Kendra Scott.

Outfit #3

It’s hard to sway me from a striped shirt. Just call me Bridgette “Breton” Raes. I styled these raw edge white denim shorts from Joe’s Jeans with a striped, long sleeve, linen tee from Frame, a pair of coral Birkenstocks, turquoise bag from Hobo and peach earrings from Bauble Bar.

Outfit #4

I couldn’t resist these super cute shorts from Parker. They have a fun retro feel to them. I styled them with a ruffle sleeve t-shirt from Rebecca Taylor and finished the look with orange sandals from Camper, pea green crossbody and rope bracelet from Miansai.

Speaking of stripes, I love striped with prints too. Pattern mixing often works when a linear print or pattern is paired with a more organic print, like in this outfit. I styled this striped button front shirt from J. Crew with a printed cotton crinkle scarf from Eileen Fisher and khaki shorts from J. Crew. I finished the look with a pair of orange sandals from Madewell, and navy backpack from Tory Burch.
