Five Ponte Skirt Outfits

By Bridgetteraes @BridgetteRaes

Ponte skirt outfits At the request of a Facebook Page subscriber, I am featuring this Ann Taylor ponte skirt in burgundy to create five ponte skirt outfits for this “one item, five fashionable ways” series.  I am happy to do it because it gives me an opportunity to talk about this must-have fabric for fall.

Why is ponte such a fabulous fabric?

Ponte is a beefy double-knit interlock fabric that is durable yet flexible and comfortable.  Simply, ponte has all the qualities that you would look for in a man– soft, flexible, attractive, strong, warm, versatile and flattering.  Ponte is a perfect weekend fabric in pieces like leggings and casual blazers, but is also great for the office in things like dresses, soft suiting, pants and skirts.  I particularly like ponte in skirts because you get the comfort of a knit skirt but in a fabric that won’t showcase your lumps and bumps.

Burgundy is beautiful and versatile

While this skirt is offered in black, I chose to feature the burgundy shade it comes in to show just how versatile the color is.  If you’re wondering what burgundy works with, instead ask yourself what it doesn’t?  Burgundy works well with most colors.  In addition, as a dark, rich shade, burgundy not only works as an accent color but as a base neutral, which you can see in this skirt.  To further show how much the addition of some burgundy will serve you in your wardrobe, here are five ponte skirt outfits in burgundy.  Remember, in this series, to show you how to maximize everything you may have in your wardrobe, I repeat many pieces several times in this post in addition to pulling items from previous weeks, as well.

If you read this series regularly, you may notice that I featured this J. Crew blouse in a post a few weeks ago.  When you bring new items into your wardrobe, it is always important to look at how the new can give the old a fresh update.  This printed top having navy in it, I decided to make navy the accent shade and added a Mango cardigan to the outfit for a relaxed work look.  By belting the blouse with a navy belt by Ralph Lauren, shape is created in the waist while the cardigan adds delicate coverage.   The outfit is finished with blue suede Ann Taylor wedge pumps, a burgundy bag by Vince Camuto and a simple silver pendant necklace and earrings.

Burgundy and gray is one of my all time favorite color combinations.  For an easy work look, a gray cowl neck sweater by T. Tahari works with this skirt.  However, don’t stop there.  Adding a few punches, like a burgundy belt, like this one from Nordstrom is an easy addition that not only helps define the waist but gives the outfit a little more pop.  Instead of black, these gray suede boots by Tsubo have been added and, for warmth, you can easily add a pair of charcoal opaque tights.  The outfit is finished with a pair of Danielle Stevens earrings and a Modcloth handbag that I’ve been using for several weeks in this series.

With burgundy being such a trendy color it shouldn’t be hard to find tops in prints that have burgundy in them.  An example of this is this J. Crew paisley top.  The beauty of printed tops is you can look to them to find accent colors to add to an outfit.  In this print there is a soft blue and camel shade so I added a blue Vince Camuto handbag and basic J. Crew cardigan in camel.  For a sensible work look, I added a pair of burgundy heeled loafers, also by Vince Camuto, to the outfit along with soft blue Betty Carre earrings.

In addition to styling one item in your wardrobe five different ways, another way to get the maximum use out of your wardrobe is to pull items from an outfit you already styled and use that piece to create a whole new outfit.  I call this the “outfit round robin” and what I did here by styling the burgundy skirt with the heels and cardigan from the previous look but, this time, added a simple chocolate tank by Jones New York.  The colors of the outfit are all brought together with this fun Modcloth handbag and the warm richness of the outfit is captured in this Modcloth bib necklace in tones of brown.

Lastly, with a tweed blazer, another hot trend for fall.  This Boden blazer, having burgundy in the plaid, works perfectly with the skirt and has the chocolate tank from the previous look layered underneath it.  To funk up this more traditional look, I added a pair of Nine West booties that can be worn with brown opaque tights.  The outfit is finished with the Vince Camuto handbag and earrings used in an earlier look and a Modcloth scarf is burgundy is added to further pick up the shade.
