Five Not-So-Dumb Holiday Sweater Outfits

By Bridgetteraes @BridgetteRaes

Holiday Sweater Outfits The surge in popularity of holiday sweaters has more to do with the seasonal trend of ugly Christmas sweater parties than having anything to do with style.   Yet, what if you want to wear a holiday sweater in less of an ironic way and more of a fashionable one?  Is it possible to wear a holiday sweater stylishly and elegantly?

If you’re looking for ugly Christmas sweaters the best place to find one is at UglyChristmasSweaterParty.com and if you’re looking for stylish ones well, unfortunately, you’ll have to dig.  Not being a fan of holiday sweaters with doo-dads, candy canes, reindeer and Santas I think there are few out there that are that fashionable.  Yet, I did find this gorgeous holiday cardigan by Reiss and decided to use it in today’s One Item, Five Fashionable Ways.  With the goal to instruct on multiple ways to wear one item, I am going to show you how you can wear it for any holiday event you may have coming up, from casually dressy to formal.  Rest assured, you don’t have to wear a tacky holiday sweater to celebrate the season, unless you want to of course.

Five Holiday Sweater Outfits Using One Sweater

Look #1- Holiday Office

Let’s say you have an office party and you want to look celebratory.  Well, this sequin cardigan can be popped over a work look while still looking professional.  I don’t care for red and green as a color combination, even during the holidays, it’s just too obvious.  Yet, I love playing on the festive combination by using different shades of these colors.  Here, I chose a moss green T Tahari top and used burgundy pumps by Coach, a Brahmin handbag, and burgundy belt.  The look is dressed up with a Stella & Dot necklace and bracelet.

Look #2- Dress up a dress

To make an everyday dress extra special for the holidays, adding a few dressy components can save you the hassle of going out and buying a new outfit.  To get into the holiday spirit, I took a bold red dress from J. Crew and layered the Reiss cardigan over it.  While this outfit would look great with black boots and tights, a simply pair of black pumps, like this pair by Nine West gives the outfit a dressier look.  To further jazz up the outfit, I added the same bracelet used int the previous look, added a pair of Kate Spade chandelier earrings and finished the look with a Sergio Feretti clutch.

Look #3- Dressy Jeans

It’s fun to have a reason to get all dressed up, but, for many, dressing up means sprucing up a pair of jeans.  If this is you, you can use this cardigan for a night out during the holidays.  Here, I styled this cardigan with a white tuxedo shirt by J. Crew and a pair of black booties by Enzo Angiolini.  The outfit is finished with the same earrings used in the last look, black agate bracelet by Andara and a bright red holiday clutch by Nina.

Look #4 – With black pants

If your idea of a holiday outfit is to wear some sort of dressy top with a pair of black pants I encourage you to think this outfit through a few more steps.  It really makes a difference.  With this cardigan paired with a pair of black pants by Calvin Klein, I layered a shimmery paisley tank underneath the sweater.  Next, to create waist shape and interest, an obi style belt was added.  To complete the outfit, a art-deco inspired necklace and black stud earrings, both by Stella & Dot, dresses up the outfit.  Lastly, for a pop, I used the same burgundy pumps from the first look.  The beauty of this outfit is it looks finished with or without the cardigan.

Look #5- Finish it formally

Not a fan of your arms?  If you feel like you’re always looking for some sort of formal wrap or cardigan for dressier occasions, this one would work perfectly for both warmth and coverage.  Here, I chose a gown by JS Boutique, the same necklace and earrings used in the previous look, a gold and silver bracelet.  The look is finished with a pair of Ivanka Trump gold and silver strappy pumps and a black, gold and silver clutch by Badgley Mischka.
