Now a standard sight around the nation’s capital, the sturdy, bright red bikes first appeared in 2010. After two years, the popular Capital Bikeshare program has done much better than expected. Future expansion may include the suburbs of Bethesda, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Friendship Heights and Forest Glen. Here are a few facts about the rapidly growing, successful program:
- 1,100: Number of bikes placed into service in over 130 locations around D.C. and Arlington since the program started in 2010.
- 15,000: The number of annual Capitol Bikeshare members, each of whom pays $75 for a one year membership.
- <30 minutes: The duration of the vast majority of commutes.
- 0$: The cost to use a Capitol Bikeshare bike for the first 30 minutes.
- 200: Number of bikes the suburb of Rockville intends to put into service. Alexandria has plans for 70.
