Earlier today there was a story on Minnesota Public Radio about the Tiny House movement. Additionally, Megan’s post from earlier today talked about her living with her husband and son in an 840 square foot home. With this as the inspiration, here are this week’s Five Friday Facts, tiny house style.

  • Tumbleweed Homes sells a 65 square foot house, appropriately named the XS-HOUSE.
  • According Jay Shafer, founder of Tumbleweed Homes, (in the documentary embedded below) building codes require homes to have one bedroom with 120 square feet.
  • Shafer’s home in the video is approximately 89 square feet. He grew up in a 4000 square foot home.
  • Graham Hill, the founder of TreeHugger.com, lives in a 350 square foot apartment (as does 2nd Green Revolution co-founder Justin Manger). He cites the statistic that the average American home has increased from 1,000 square feet in 1950s to 2,300 nowadays.
  • The average home size in Europe is 1,000 square feet.
